Subject: KYRIA UPDATE Date: Sat, 28 Mar 1998 11:04:48 -0700 From: Laura Redish KYRIA (PC): EXTENDED PLAY VERSION Kyria Vesper, once and future Sunfighter, is the sixth and final incarnation of the fifth Deathless guardian of the sphere. She is a high-level cleric, a long-time hero, and a repository for the skills of many lifetimes; if you want to assume she knows how to do something for any reason, feel free. I actually do have a spell list for her, but it's humungous and I'm certainly not going to make everyone keep checking it, so for the purposes of the board you can assume she can cast any AD&D clerical spell. She is subject to all normal spellcasting restrictions, so if she gets hit while casting it does screw up her spell. She also has a holy two-handed sword which, among other things, detects lies and projects true seeing on command, and a negative THAC0 with said sword. By 1998 she has been practicing martial arts of various sorts for most of three thousand years, which you may want to take into consideration. She's been trying to stay away from charging into combat herself, though, thinking her healing and protective spells to be more useful to the group than ass-kicking. Kyria is an extraordinarily wise woman. Sometimes she likes to act that way, and sometimes she doesn't. She has an extremely flexible worldview informed by seven perspectives and thousands of years; her life has been a continual reinvention process, and her repertoire of reactions is a deep one. Consistent elements are a real engagement with and love of humanity (no aloof immortal she), discomfort with interfering directly in politics, an emphasis on the microcosmic, a good nature, a sometimes subtle sense of humor, a certain steady patience, and the tendency, sometimes, to become overwhelmed by nostalgia, especially in the lonelier hours of the night. Kyria has lost many things, but she knows there are many more to find. She is a tall, soft, dark-haired woman, with an oval face and strangely reflective eyes. Sometimes she wears mirrored sunglasses. She's like that. Kyria considers Warp a good friend and trusts him implicitly; she will help him in any way she can and will defer to his leadership, especially in front of the other Enigmans. Please leave the development of any further relationship between them, or lack thereof, to me and Doug. Kyria doesn't like space dragons and is wary of Fallout, but will not be openly hostile. Leave her reactions to any of his pranks to me. The only other current tensions to be aware of are that she is resistant to the idea of leaving Ansalia (she'll do it to save Warp's girlfriend if it gets necessary) and is a Green Bay Packers fan. Kyria is my PC with whom I am most open to other authors, and you have a lot of leeway with her. She can withstand a tremendous amount of pressure, and you are therefore invited to be as evil to her as you'd like, even including things that are so disturbing you would normally only inflict them on your own characters. It's also okay for you to speak for her, act for her, or add to her background in a way that it's not with my other characters. Basically, provided you stay consistent with her powers and personality as described above, I'm waiving most of the restrictions about MOVING her. Parameters: Don't think for her, or write from her viewpoint, as she is the unapologetic chronicler of my share in the Enigma story and I want exclusive control of her narration. Don't make major dramatic decisions for her. Don't give her children; I know who her children have been. Don't mess with her homeworld; it's our Ansalia, and nothing should be done with it, either now or in her past, that would damage the consistency of her world being ours. Don't make her panic or act poorly-adjusted; you might theoretically succeed in evoking such a response from her, but if you do, I'll write it. Similarly, don't make her do anything that could potentially be inconsistent with a character who is both good and a priestess of justice; anything out of character should be handled by me. Don't establish things she *doesn't* know about without asking me. And don't commit her romantically. Remember also that she does not sleep, does not require food or water, is immune to alcohol, most drugs, and many mental manipulations, and has some other idiosyncrasies related to her nature, so if you're not familiar with the Sunfighter, please leave actions affecting her open-ended or consult Laura (or Doug, if she's not available). Other than that, you've got broad discretion with her. You can add details to her voluminous past (like when Evan said she used to hang out with the Sheepherder and his sheep, or Doug added bits of Warp and Kyria backstory). You can use her for color (like when Jonah had her wearing a cheesehead). You can speak for her in any way that is useful for your own characters' development; she puts a lot of time and energy into trying to make other people comfortable and keep things running smoothly, and she's got a deep repertoire, so it's okay to use her for whatever your character needs to hear. (Like when Jonah had her cheering up S-Guy by saying "Fuck the popular crowd"; it's not her usual take on things, but if it made S-Guy feel better, it's reasonable.) You can have her use any of her powers if it's useful to your post. Kyria's composite personality and complexly evolved worldview make it hard to screw her up too much, so I'm not too worried. If you get any of this *really* wrong, I'll just let you know. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Enigma Enigma Enigma Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 23:22:29 -0700 From: Laura Redish Anyway, a couple of notes on Kyria-as-Sunny: Her Kyria abilities, when she does believe she can use them, are unimpaired. So, for example, she remains one seriously kick-ass swordswoman--more so than Sunny ever was--but she doesn't believe she can cast clerical spells, so she won't try. Her mental Sunny powers are completely accessible now. (They are NOT normally). She is, I believe, a 9th level bard (though it's late and I'll have to check the level on that). She can use bardic powers. She can cast low-level mage spells. When her plague is lifted, she will no longer be able to do these things anymore. They have been unearthed from her composite psyche by her illness, and will return from whence they came when it recedes. As for her non-Sunny memories and knowledge, she will manifest them here and not there, showing no awareness of where they came from, just as the first Sunny did with the memories and knowledge of Lian and Tjekanefir, when she was suppressing them. She may claim not to know something but act just as if she does. She may acknowledge knowing something that it would seem utterly contradictory for her to believe she knows and explain it as a dream she had, once. Or she may forget something and go cheerfully about her business, as if having forgotten it is nothing to worry about. Her new personality is something of a cross between a sweet, friendly, enthusiastic artist and a haunted visionary. Moments from her other personalities will continue to bubble through here and there; that was part of Sunny's personality. What she knows and doesn't know, what she believes and doesn't believe, may not seem completely consistent from post to post. That's part of Sunny's personality too. And if she gets really threatened, leave it to me. As a last note, credit where it's due: what a really cool plague to stick her with, Jonah. Kudos. (: --L ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: A Note About Kyria Date: Fri, 12 Jun 1998 12:03:13 -0700 From: Laura Redish Save Address Block Sender It's safe to assume that Kyria has told all of her current teammates the basics of her story. She's usually a bit close to her chest about it, but being in a superhero world where people from other dimensions and with strange powers aren't that unheard of, she is probably ditching that. So everyone probably knows that she is from an alternate world, is thousands of years old, is a composite life form, and has various and seemingly unrelated magic powers of which the most impressive of which is healing (though she has no access to that at the moment). It's unlikely any of them know anything about Sunny, though, except that Warp probably knows she was an early incarnation of Kyria's. She won't have gone into her extremely long history unless one of you would have been espcially interested in it (in which case email me for details). --L
